Design Thinking
Solve for the human, not the org chart.
What it is
Design Thinking is human-centred problem solving: understanding the people you serve deeply, defining the problem from their perspective, generating options, and testing cheap prototypes before committing expensive resources.
Why it matters
Organisations naturally design for their own convenience — processes mirror departments, products mirror internal structures. Customers experience the seams. Design Thinking reverses the direction: start with the human experience and organise the business behind it.
When to use it
Use it for customer experience problems, new product and service design, process redesign where adoption matters, and any challenge where the real user is not in the room.
How it works
- Observe real users doing the real task — do not rely on what they report.
- Define the problem from the user's perspective, in their language.
- Generate many options before evaluating any of them.
- Build the cheapest prototype that can produce real feedback.
- Test with real users, learn, and iterate before scaling.
Business application
Design Thinking shapes customer onboarding, service journeys, digital products and even internal tools — the processes employees must willingly use for the business to function.
Example
Support tickets are blamed on customer error. Observation shows the sign-up form itself causes the errors. A two-week redesign of the form — tested with five real customers — cuts ticket volume in half, at a fraction of the cost of more support staff.
Exercise
Practice
Watch one real customer or employee complete one real task in your business. Note every moment of friction, hesitation or workaround. Redesign the single worst moment.
